"Fort Laramie National Historic Site was originally established as a private fur trading fort in 1834. Situated in western Wyoming, the site witnessed the entire sweeping saga of America’s western expansion and Indian resistance to encroachment on their territories. Indians, trappers, traders, missionaries, emigrants, gold seekers, soldiers, cowboys and homesteaders would leave their mark on a place that would become famous in the American West. In 2009 the site was the subject of a digital preservation pilot project between the National Park Service, CyArk, and the University of Colorado Denver."

"The town of Buford, Wyoming – population 1 – was sold for $900,000 to an unidentified buyer from Vietnam on Thursday, April 5th, after an 11-minute Internet auction that attracted worldwide interest. The tiny Western town garnered online viewers and bidders from 46 countries for the sale of 10-plus acres with a convenience store, gas station and modular home located in southeastern Wyoming between Cheyenne and Laramie. The buyer, who wished to remain anonymous, flew to Wyoming from Vietnam for a purchase he likened to “the American dream,” according to a statement released by Williams & Williams, the Oklahoma auction house handling the sale."

At 13,775 feet (4,199 meters), Grand Teton is the highest point in the Teton range in Wyoming and considered one of the most formidable mountain climbs in the United States.

"An Iridescent Cloud in Himalaya, I observed early morning on October 18, 2009 from path to Khumjung, just 500 meters from road fork to Gokyo and Tengboche. I was ahead of my friends, so when I met my Annapurna buddy, who was going to Khunjung (to see Yeti scalp) I decided to go with him for a while. We sat on stones to talk and drink my green tea and suddenly I saw this spectacular phenomena . It was my first time I saw this phenomena and luckily I had my Nikon D90, so I was able to capture it.... Turbulence, ice crystals in the low cloud and wonderful Himalaya produce this great picture. The mountain is Thamserku (6623 m)."

The smallest town in the United States

In the late 19th century, 2000 people lived in Buford, Wyoming. Railroad workers needed somewhere to settle, and the small town wasn't half bad in terms of pop-up cities in the barren West. But as the railroad progressed toward the Pacific, the workers moved with it, leaving Buford to slowly decline into almost-nothingness.

Today, the mountain town of Buford has only 1 permanent resident. Hundreds of people everyday pass through the town on Interstate 80 but only one man, Don Sammons, holds down the fort. Sammons operates the Buford Trading Post, and his been alone since 2008 when his son moved away. Despite its tiny size, it has become somewhat of a roadside attraction for its street sign that states quite plainly: Elevation 8000, Population 1.

The Medicine Wheel and the Four Directions

    Media_httpstaticatlas_ifwef

"A mysterious pattern of stones sits at the summit of Medicine Mountain, nearly 10,000 feet above the Bighorn Range in Wyoming. Covered by heavy snows for most of the year, the stone configuration reveals itself and its purpose only in the summer months.

The stones are arranged in the shape of a wheel, 80 feet across and with 28 spokes emanating from a central cairn. The cairn, a ring-shaped pile of rocks, is large enough to sit in and is surrounded by six others that lie along the wheel’s circumference."
