Hats off to Richard Waters

An improvised performance by Mark Korven on the mega bass waterphone.

Richard Waters is the inventor of the waterphone.

Waterphones are in fact stainless steel and bronze monolithic, one-of-a-kind, acoustic, tonal-friction instruments that utilize water in the interior of their resonators to bend tones and create water echos. In the world family of musical instruments, the Waterphone is between a Tibetian Water Drum, an African Kalimba (thumb piano) and a 16th century Peg or Nail Violin.

Platycerium - A Pretty Peculiar Plant

"Platycerium – even the name sounds odd. Mostly referred to as Staghorn or Elkhorn ferns, this genus of fern is, to say the very least, unusual looking. Yet they are fascinating to look at because their fronds are something else, quite unique. To look at a platycerium is to look back in time millions of years."

Fox on Stilts ?

"No, it’s not a fox at all, but a maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus), the largest canid in South America. The maned wolf is actually neither a wolf nor a fox, but is a canid with its own genus. With those long legs, this dog can grow to be three feet tall !"

Roll Cloud Over Wisconsin

"What kind of cloud is this? A type of arcus cloud called a roll cloud. These rare long clouds may form near advancing cold fronts. In particular, a downdraft from an advancing storm front can cause moist warm air to rise, cool below its dew point, and so form a cloud. When this happens uniformly along an extended front, a roll cloud may form. Roll clouds may actually have air circulating along the long horizontal axis of the cloud. A roll cloud is not thought to be able to morph into a tornado. Unlike a similar shelf cloud, a roll cloud is completely detached from their parent cumulonimbus cloud. Pictured above, a roll cloud extends far into the distance as a storm approached in 2007 in Racine, Wisconsin, USA."

Cherkees { Beef Jerky Potato Chips } Adventures with Foodbeast

"Here’s the elevator pitch, beef jerky meets potato chips. Cherkees are beef jerky flavor without the chew, potato crisps with real bits of beef in them, keeping the look and flavor of beef jerky but with the crunch of a potato chip. The brand stresses that these are not beef jerky flavored potato chips, but in fact beef jerky and potato chips in one complete bite.

Much like traditional jerky, Cherkees are low-fat, high-protein, and are not fried. They have less than a third the fat of traditional potato chips and 12 grams of protein per serving. The new chips come in several jump-off flavors including: Hot Pepper, Teriyaki, Cracked Pepper and Smokehouse. ($4.99 – $9.99 @ RowanLane)"

Waterfall Flowing Upwards

"Storms recently hammered Sydney, Australia, dropping a month of rain in a single day. They were so severe that this waterfall south of the city appeared to be flowing upwards. If you watch carefully, you can see wind sweeping water over the upper edge."

‪The Merry Cemetery‬‏ : Cimitirul Vesel de la Sapanta

"The Merry Cemetery (Romanian: Cimitirul Vesel) is a cemetery in the village of Săpânţa, Maramureş county, Romania. It is famous for its colourful tombstones with naïve paintings describing, in an original and poetic manner, the persons that are buried there as well as scenes from their lives. The Merry Cemetery became an open-air museum and a national tourist attraction.

The unusual feature of this cemetery is that it diverges from the prevalent belief, culturally shared within European societies – a belief that views death as something indelibly solemn. Connections with the local Dacian culture have been made, a culture whose philosophical tenets presumably vouched for the immortality of the soul and the belief that death was a moment filled with joy and anticipation for a better life"
