More than 400 of the permanent sculptures have been installed in recent months in the National Marine Park of Cancún, Isla Mujeres, and Punta Nizuc ( map of the region ) as part of a major artwork called "The Silent Evolution." The installation is the first endeavor of a new underwater museum called MUSA, or Museo Subacuático de Arte.

Created by Mexico-based British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, the Caribbean installation is intended to eventually cover more than 4,520 square feet (420 square meters), which would make it "one of the largest and most ambitious underwater attractions in the world," according to a museum statement.

"I performed an experiment to see what the differences were between semi-automatic pistols and revolvers. The advantage of shooting under water is that you can see the boundary of the gas flow fields almost perfectly."

"Most underwater photographers are divers first, then they get into photography to capture the beautiful scenes they see underwater. I was a photographer first. My first serious underwater photography was when I finished graduate school at Pratt in 1983. I returned to Hawaii to teach photography at University of Hawaii, and decided to photograph surfers from underwater. My first attempts were in color, but the results were very murky blue on blue. Then I switched to black and white, and everything came alive.” ~ Wayne Levin

"Great shots of small and amusing invertebrates with vibrant colors and crazy shapes. The series entitled “Underwater experiments” come from the Russian Alexander Semenov taken at the White Sea Biological Station. “Beautiful monsters from the White Sea. This is only small part of my underwater work at the White Sea Biological Station. When I went underwater for the first time I was absolutely shocked. White Sea showed me another world with it’s own aliens, and some of them were really amazing creatures.” This is only a short selection of the photos, you may check the complete gallery with larger photo resolutions here.
