Desert "Trees"

Photograph by Adrianafranco Fran

"This image has a wonderful texture that is almost surreal. At first glance, it's hard to even distinguish what the subject of this photo is—is it snow? Some kind of microscopic leaf or moss? It's just downright stunning as a desert aerial."—Janna Dotschkal, assistant photo editor

Raiding the Bread Basket - Use and Abuse of the Mississippi River Basin

Click to start interactive >>

"You wake up to cereal made from midwestern corn. You slip on cotton clothes, get into a vehicle fueled partly by ethanol and dine later on chicken and rice—all made possible by crops from the Mississippi River Basin, a vast area that stretches from Montana to New York and drains all or parts of 31 states.

The part of the basin east of the Mississippi River largely relies on rain to grow crops; farmers on the west side irrigate much, much more. All told, it's among the most productive farming regions in the world."

Horseshoe Bend

Dramatic river bend surrounds a natural red-rocked pedestal

"Just a short hike from Route 89 near Page, Arizona is one of America's great natural wonders. In a spectacularly dramatic landscape, the area provides great hiking among the red rocks looking over the river.

Although Horseshoe Bend is a natural formation, it is almost perfect enough to cast some doubt. Swirling around a 1,000-foot-high pedestal, the Colorado River bends in a smooth circle around a massive, craggy rock formation before flowing back through the Southwest"

The River of Five Colors : Cano Cristales, Colombia

"In Colombia, Rio Cano Castales, or the ‘river of five colors’, is a special place where for a brief period of time every year when the conditions are just right, the river explodes with vibrant colours your eyes won’t believe. During the short span between the wet and dry season, when the water level is just right, a unique species of plant that lines the river floor called Macarenia clavigera turns a brilliant red. It is offset by splotches of yellow and green sand, blue water, and countless shades in between."

Okavango Delta in Botswana : the World’s Largest Inland Delta

"Okavango Delta forms from the water of Okavango River which creates a huge swampy area in Kalahari desert. A few of millions of years ago the Okavango River was flowing into the Lake Makgadikgadi but, due to tectonic activity, the flow has been interrupted and this caused emergence of the Okavango Delta. The main source of the water for the delta are seasonal Angolan rains which are lasting from October to April. When the flods are most intensive, Okavango Delta covers more than 16,000 square kilometers but, during the dry period of the year, its surface is less than 9,000 square kilometers."
