"Inspiration for my painting usually comes from sightings of wildlife, views of habitat or the effects of changing light, seasons and weather, often combined to create the ideal composition.

Painting directly onto feathers brings with it a number of challenges; extensive feather preparation, sympathetic compositions for a small vertical canvas area, delicate brushwork directly onto the feather and careful framing. However painstaking the process, I consider the result to be worth every effort. I always feel a sense of pride and joy when I have created a finished painting from the blank white canvas of a feather. Although I sometimes feel a pang of regret when one goes, I console myself when I see the joy others get from looking at them."  Ian Davey

"A peacock farm in Linyi, northern China’s Shandong Province, has created a wedding gown made out of more than 3,000 peacock feathers. According to farm owner Qiu Yun it took 3,150 feathers collected from more than 200 male peacocks to make the dress, which took two months to be put together. (Quirky China News / Rex Features)"

"The Feather Book was created by Dionisio Minaggio, the Chief Gardener of the State of Milan in 1618. We have no idea why he made it, although it has been suggested that it might have been a project to occupy his staff during the long winter months and to use up some of the feathers left over from the birds used in the kitchen. It has also been suggested that the project may have been commissioned by the Governor. At the time, Milan was under Spanish rule and the Spaniards were familiar with feather art as it was done in Central and South America. Although the style and techniques used were quite different, it is possible that such works may have been an inspiration for this project."
