Small Farm Rising is a one-hour documentary film inspired by first generation farmers who are redefining agriculture in America.

Filmed in the Champlain Valley and Adirondack Mountains of New York State, the documentary follows a group of farmers from three unique farms as they carry plants, animals and soils through a growing season. These modern small farms have robust business models, sustainable practices and deep connections to the communities they serve: a goat farm that produces award-winning cheeses; a horse-powered, CSA (community supported agriculture) farm which provides 100 members with a full diet year round; and a vegetable farm run by two youthful entrepreneurs.

July 1940. "Farm woman washing clothes in her motor-driven washing machine. Near Lincoln, Vermont." Sliver gelatin print by Louise Rosskam.

"When I was about 4 years old I was helping my mother with the Monday wash, As I was feeding a washcloth into the Maytag's wringers, the rolls grabbed my fingers and commenced to ingest me...off my feet and all the way to my armpit. My screams brought Mom running ! I still have the scar from that Monday morning in 1953." Rick C.

"Grit is one of the longest-running publications in the country and has been a part of the American tapestry, particularly in the Heartland and rural areas throughout the nation, for many, many years. If the old adage could be rewritten, it would be, “As American as Mom, Apple Pie and Grit.” One thing that continuously surprises and delights all who work here is the number of people who hear where we work and say, “Grit? I used to sell Grit when I was a kid!”"

     "Blue-Moon"

Robert Duncan was born in Utah and began painting at age eleven. He spent summers as a boy on his grandparents' ranch in Wyoming where his grandmother gave him his first set of oil paints. It was there that he grew to love the country, the open spaces, and the rural lifestyle. Robert has painted professionally for about 25 years. He studied at the University of Utah and worked as a commercial artist before his full-time dedication to the fine art of the American West. Robert was elected into the Cowboy Artists of America at a young age and won two silver medals in their annual exhibition at the Phoenix Art Museum - a dream come true. Robert, his wife Linda, their six children, and a lively assortment of farm animals live in the little town of Midway in Northern Utah.

"I decided years ago to paint the things that I cared most about. That decision has brought me a lot of joy and satisfaction and I'm especially grateful that my family has been such an important part of all of this."

"Farms are for Kids" by Robert Duncan

"Immunological diseases, such as eczema and asthma, are on the increase in westernised society and represent a major challenge for 21st century medicine. A new study has shown, for the first time, that growing up on a farm directly affects the regulation of the immune system and causes a reduction in the immunological responses to food proteins."

"The Goat Tower at the Fairview Wine and Cheese Farm in the Paarl area of South Africa, just a short journey from Cape Town has become a symbol of the farm even if it is better known for its wine than its goat’s cheese!

Since the construction of the tower in the 1980s several farmers around the world have seen this wonderful caprine condominium and have followed suit. It may not fit the exact criteria for free range goat herding but the goats themselves look pretty happy with their accommodation."

"What's the difference between a weanling and a yearling, or a farrow and a barrow? Country and city mice alike will delight in Julia Rothman's charming illustrated guide to the curious parts and pieces of rural living. Dissecting everything from tractors and pigs to fences, hay bales, crop rotation patterns, and farm tools, Rothman gives a richly entertaining tour of the quirky details of country life. From the shapes of squash varieties to the parts of a goat; from how a barn is constructed to what makes up a beehive, every corner of the barnyard is uncovered and celebrated. A perfect gift for gardeners, locavores, homesteaders, and country-living enthusiasts alike.

Utterly charming and thoroughly researched, Farm Anatomy is one of those rare treats that speak to your eyes and your heart, and in the process manage to expand your mind."

As farmers and ranchers, we’ve raised pretty much everything. Except our voices. For too long the voice of farmers and ranchers has often been missing in the conversation about where food in America comes from. That changes now. USFRA is inviting all farmers and ranchers to join us in leading the conversation with Americans. Raise your voice and share your story. Together, we can begin a dialogue with Americans about where their food comes from, the importance of today’s agriculture and our commitment to continuous improvement.
