New findings rekindle old debates about when the first people arrived and why their civilization collapsed.

"Hundreds of years ago, a small group of Polynesians rowed their wooden outrigger canoes across vast stretches of open sea, navigating by the evening stars and the day's ocean swells. When and why these people left their native land remains a mystery. But what is clear is that they made a small, uninhabited island with rolling hills and a lush carpet of palm trees their new home, eventually naming their 63 square miles of paradise Rapa Nui—now popularly known as Easter Island." from Smithsonian.com

Photographer: Wally Pacholka             Summary Author: Constance Walker; Wally Pacholka

The constellation Crux or Southern Cross, shown at extreme top center above, lies within the stream of stars that makes up the Milky Way (lower left to top center).... The sky above Easter Island, where the image was taken, is so dark there’s a wealth of stars visible to the naked eye. However, for at least half of the world's population that lives in cities, the brightest stars in a constellation may be the only ones they can see because of light polluted skies. Note that the Large Magellanic Cloud is at lower right. At bottom, in silhouette, are the mysterious Easter Island stone statues (Moai).

"I directed, shot, wrote and edited Caballo Loco on Easter Island as part of my graduate thesis for my MFA in Science and Natural History Filmmaking from Montana State University. In 2007 National Geographic took my 25-minute film and created a 5-minute short for a segment on Wild Chronicles, airing nationally on PBS.

If you would like a copy of the entire film please contact me at laurajeanboyd@yahoo.com

    Thanks for viewing my work!
     Laura"

This short is narrated by Boyd Matson.
