HELLO KITTY IN SPACE

"NASA doesn’t have a lock on space exploration anymore. Just ask Lauren Rojas, a seventh grader in Antioch, Calif., who recently launched a balloon to 93,625 feet* using a do-it-yourself balloon kit from High Altitude Science. In addition to an altimeter, thermometer, satellite tracker and a host of cameras, Rojas added a decorative rocket ship piloted by a Hello Kitty doll her dad got her on a business trip in Tokyo. The video climaxes at the 2:15 mark, when the balloon, having expanded to 53 times its original size in the low-pressure environment of the upper atmosphere, explodes as planned, starting the kit’s descent to Earth:

The project is a terrific illustration of just how accessible the near-space environment has become. High Altitude Science was founded two years ago by Joseph Maydell, a flight controller for the International Space Station at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, who wanted everyone to experience the beautiful views of the planet that he got to see in the course of his work. And in the coming years, private space companies such as SpaceX and Virgin Galactic will start regularly flying rockets higher than the best weather balloons can fly. The benefit to space research—and to cheeky exploration videos—should be immense.

*: Yes, 93,625 feet is well short of the 62-mile-high Kármán line, the official boundary of space as recognized by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI). That shouldn’t diminish the excitement of the event."

Donald Zolan Biography:

Donald Zolan grew up in Brookfield, Illinois with a family full of artists so began drawing at age three. He was already working in watercolors and winning local competitions at the age of five. It wasn’t until he was thirteen that he won his first major art competition. His award for winning this competition was a scholarship to the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago. Not even three years later he won a scholarship to Chicago’s American Academy of Art.

He wasn’t able to pursue full-time formal training until after high school when he received a full scholarship to the American Academy of Fine Art. After he graduated from there he was selected as an apprentice with Haddon Sundbloom, a famous illustrator most known for his Coca-Cola Santa Claus. Over the next twelve years Zolan was very successful in the commercial art industry. However, he found that his passion was his fine art paintings which were shown in galleries and museums around the world. Finally, he opened his own gallery in Nantucket.

From there, his work has blossomed to what it is today. His images are licensed on a wide range of products by more than 20 national and international companies. His works have appeared on plates, dolls, figurines and other fine collectibles. His limited edition prints and original oil paintings are displayed in the finest galleries and museums.

His devotion to capturing the magical moments of childhood reflect back on Zolan’s own happy childhood in Brookfield, Illinois. His parents fully supported and nurtured their son’s talent, and, by his own admission, Zolan had an idyllic childhood in America’s heartland.

In his own words, Zolan expresses his love of children, “I love little children, the way their eyes light up with excitement as they awaken to the world around them. It’s a marvelous time of life, filled with wonderment. A time when each new discovery is another magical moment.”

This love and joy is reflected in his works. The unique combination of a subject matter so close to his heart and incredible talent, nurtured through technical training and years of experience, make Zolan’s paintings among the most popular in the world.

"Welcome. We’re glad you’re here to learn more about the Central Intelligence Agency. The CIA is an independent US government agency that provides national security “intelligence” to key US leaders so they can make important, informed decisions. CIA employees gather intelligence (or information) in a variety of ways, not just by “spying” like you see in the movies or on TV (though we do some of that, too). On the following pages, you can read more about us, play some games, and help us solve some puzzles. Throughout this section, you’ll also see some top secret things you won’t find anywhere else.

So if you’re ready to learn more about the CIA, our employees, and what we do every day, click the appropriate link above and we’ll start you on your way."
