"Can you imagine being able to produce enough water in the Sahara to grow crops there? Can you imagine harnessing sufficient quantities of solar power to supply electricity to cities in Africa and cities in Europe? Can you imagine producing a sustainable bio-fuel that doesn't impact on world food supplies? Charlie Paton, Michael Pawlyn and Bill Watts can and what's more they can imagine all these happening in the same place at the same time."

"Gedi is one of Kenya's great little known treasures, an astonishing vanished metropolis lying at the heart of the immense Arabuko Sokoke forest sixty miles away from Mombassa, Kenya’s second city. It is moreover a site of enormous mystery, an archaeological enigma that to this day creates intense discussion between historians. Who built in and why did they leave ?"

Maybe you've read Stephen King's huge fantasy epic "The Dark Tower", or perhaps the Tower of Mordor from "The Lord of the Rings" more readily comes to mind? In any case, you'll be surprised to find the fantastic huge black tower actually exists... on a small island near Africa. More precisely, in the Obo National Park on the São Tomé island in the Gulf of Guinea. It's called Pico Cão Grande, or the Great Dog peak.

This is one of the highest needle-shaped "volcanic plug" peaks on Earth (300 m), perhaps even more impressive than the Devils Tower in Wyoming (386 m), as it rises above the landscape in an equally unexpected and even bluntly obscene way. It will be however more difficult to photograph than Devils Tower : its top is often hidden by clouds or precipitation, not to mention that it's harder to get to the tiny country of São Tomé and Principe.

The heavy mist and humidity over the surrounding jungle (the rainfall varies between 4500 mm to 5000 mm per year) adds to the mystery and the foreboding feeling of the Great Dog Peak, as its rocky presence rises and darkly glistens in the murk.

The Moon and stars of Taurus (with the Pleiades) and Perseus accompany the spectacular view of Comet Hale-Bopp above the Great Pyramids of Giza in 1997.

"Comet Hale-Bopp makes a spectacular appearance above Cheops, the Great Pyramid in 1997, probably more than four thousand years since the comet’s last appearance. Comet Hale-Bopp’s intriguing connection to our ancient past inspired the photographer to document the comet above two of the most famous ancient monuments in the world, the Pyramids of Giza, (Egypt) and Stonehenge (England). A fascinating journey followed, successfully documenting this unique and unrepeatable event.

As noted by the photographer "Watching the comet above the Pyramids prompted my curiosity. Did ancient people see the comet? How have ancient cultures been influenced by astronomical events? What can we learn from this for today? It is a privilege to have documented a great comet appearing above world heritage sites, and an experience I’ll always remember"".

"This is one of the main attractions of Senegal. It is located 30 km from Dakar. Surprising characteristic of it is absolutely incredible content in water of salts (especially magnesium), whose concentration is 10 times higher than the concentration in the waters of the oceans. On average it is about 350-380 grams per liter. Halophytic bacteria, which are the only inhabitants, give the lake an unusual pink color."

"Bright planet Jupiter, starry sky and the band of Milky Way as seen in dark night of African Sahara. Deep in Tassili National Park, in the heart of the Sahara desert in southern Algeria, giant eroded sandstone cliffs are barely illuminated by the photographer flashlight. Prehistoric skygazers surely witnessed a similar sky. In addition to dramatic sandstone formations, the Tassili region is noted for rock paintings and archaeological sites dating to neolithic times."

Libya (Arabic: ‏ليبيا‎ Lībyā) is a country in the Maghreb region of North Africa. Bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Libya faces Egypt to the east, Sudan to the south east, Chad and Niger to the south, and Algeria and Tunisia to the west.

As a result of the 2011 Libyan civil war, there are currently two entities claiming to be the de jure governing authority in Libya. The institutions led by Muammar Gaddafi refer to the Libyan state as the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya and are based in Sirte. The Tripoli-based National Transitional Council, led by Mustafa Abdul Jalil, controls most of the country and uses the short-form name Libya for the Libyan state, but has also on occasion referred to it in the long-form as the Libyan Republic.. Within the United Nations, Libya under Gaddafi was officially known as the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya."

MOSHI – Four tourists were greeted by a rather unexpected guest when they reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain, located in Tanzania.

They spotted a dog living at the Uhuru peak of the Kilimanjaro Mountain, which rises 19,341 feet above sea level.

"Yes, but how many dark clouds have a multicolored lining? Pictured, behind this darker cloud, is a pileus iridescent cloud, a group of water droplets that have a uniformly similar size and so together diffract different colors of sunlight by different amounts. The above image was taken just after the picturesque sight was noticed by chance by a photographer in Ethiopia. A more detailed picture of the same cloud shows not only many colors, but unusual dark and wavy bands whose origins are thought related to wave disturbances in the cloud."
