Cactus Dome, Operation HARDTACK and the Pacific Proving Ground, Marshall Islands

An enormous concrete structure built over a nuclear crater

"Between 1946 and 1962, the US military conducted 105 atmospheric nuclear tests over the "Pacific Proving Grounds," a euphemism for the Marshall Islands and several other nearby South Pacific atolls.

In the late 1970s, in an effort to clean up the radioactive debris left by those explosions, the US government dug up 111,000 cubic yards of soil from the Bikini and Rongelap atolls and deposited it on Runit Island. Its resting place would be in a 350-foot wide crater that had been created two decades earlier by an 18-kiloton nuclear test code-named Cactus.

Covering up that giant radioactive pit cost the government nearly a quarter of a billion dollars and took three years to complete. The result: an enormous, foot-and-a-half-thick, 100,000-square-foot dome consisting of 358 gigantic concrete panels. Despite signs warning off visitors, it is still possible to make landfall on Runit and stomp across the Cactus Dome. Bring a Geiger counter !"

"Operation HARDTACK I consisted of 35 nuclear tests conducted at the Pacific Proving Ground between April 28 and August 18, 1958. These tests included balloon, surface, barge, underwater, and rocket-borne high-altitude tests. The first test, Yucca, was a nuclear device attached to a helium balloon launched from the USS Boxer near Enewetak Atoll.

The tests comprising the 1958 Operation HARDTACK I were as follows:

And this Little Piggy.....Eats with Two Mouths !

"A greedy little piglet from northern China is making the most of eating double the amount of her brothers and sisters – because she has two snouts.

This little piggy was born with the deformity of having two functioning mouths.

Its owner, farmer Bai Xuejin said: ‘We knew something was different because her head was so large we had to help when her mother gave birth.
‘I’ve been raising pigs for 15 years and I’ve never seen anything like this before.’
The squealer could not suckle its mother because of its unique facial figure, so Mr Xuejin had to raise it by hand until it was old enough to eat solid food.
‘Both mouths function normally and so she eats and drinks through both of them which means she gets through a lot more food than her brothers and sisters,’ he added.
Mr Xuejin, from Zhangjia in the Jilin province, is planning on saving her from the chop and putting her on show at his farm because people are fascinated by her.
He said: ‘She is too special to end up on a plate.’" (Metro)

Chinese Fruit Pit Carving : "Uncanny Works of Art"

"The miniature folk art of fruit pit carving has been practiced in China for centuries, and is still praised for turning useless fruit stones into valuable works of art.

Nut carving (Heidao), which refers to both fruit pit and walnut carving, became popular during the Song Dynasty (960-1279), and by the time of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) it had become one of the most appreciated art forms in mainland China, with royalty and high-ranking officials considering it fashionable to wear carved fruit pit accessories. Even today, intricate nut sculptures like those made in Suzhou, Yangzhou, Weifang in Shandong and Guangdong Province are famous for their level of detail and unique characteristics."

John Evans and his Giant Vegetables

"John Evans from Palmer (Alaska) grows BIG vegetables - so big, in fact, that he and his wife, Mary, hold several world, U.S. and state records for them."

Has the Mystery of the Iapetus Ridge been Solved ?

"Iapetus is a puzzle. Half of the moon is dark-coloured and the other half light, with no shades of grey. It is bulging around its equator, as if it is rapidly spinning. But it actually rotates rather leisurely, once every 79 Earth-days. Most puzzling of all is a ridge that stretches almost half way round its equator."
