"This colour-enhanced photomicrograph shows different species of bacteria that cause dental plaque - a colourless film that forms on teeth caused by the growth of bacterial colonies. The sample was removed from the mouth of a patient diagnosed with an aggressive form of gum disease."

"Meighan@Flickr provides this photo via the Flickr pool, showing a Madagascar lace plant (a photograph elsewhere makes the aquatic environment more apparent, as a fish is present). Thanks, Meighan!Aponogeton madagascariensis is an aquatic species endemic to Madagascar. Also known as laceleaf, latticeleaf or Madagascar lace plant, this species has leaves that are uniquely fenestrated--they have natural holes that result in the plant's lace-like appearance. These holes are created by programmed cell death processes, which first make small gaps on young leaves that eventually increase 10 to 20 times in size, resulting in the conspicuous openings present on mature leaves. The genus Aponogeton has over 40 species, the majority of which have foliage and flowers that grow fully submerged in water (from Speichert & Speichert's Encyclopedia of Water Garden Plants (2004)). Though its delicate appearance makes it seem suited to still water, Aponogeton madagascariensis is reportedly found mostly in flowing water. This species is very desirable as an ornamental aquarium plant, but it has a reputation among aquarium hobbyists as being difficult to grow."via Botany Photo of the Day
