"Above, a family from Tokyo, settled on the sidewalk around their television, crowded by neatly organized electronic appliances, expelled closets, and prized heirloom pottery. Two wives, a husband, and their children in West Africa’s Mali, on the roof of their hut with the tools of their agricultural toils. A Baptist family, smiling and clutching an illustrated Bible on the suburban road loaded with furniture and appliances in Houston, Texas.

Photographer Peter Menzel began his project Material World: A Global Family Portrait back in the ’90s, traveling to 30 countries around the world to capture families with most of their possessions. Using data from United Nations and the World Bank, he searched for “average” families — average in location, size, background, and occupation. Check out the resulting, slightly dated but utterly fascinating portraits in our gallery and see what sort of a material world we’re living in."

    The Chemtrails Conspiracy Theory

"Chemtrails are phenomena that people come across on a daily basis. With the amount of planes that crisscross the sky it is almost impossible to go a day without seeing a long white line in the sky. Just what they are though is the source of an intense and often angry debate that has been raging for years. "

    The Condensation Trail Theory

"Condensation trails are created in the upper atmosphere by passing high speed planes or rockets. As the hot exhaust fumes enter the atmosphere they cool in the surrounding air and create microscopic droplets of water or ice. These droplets of water come together and form the trail which may exist for a couple of minutes or a couple of hours depending on local weather conditions

"It has been drilled into us that “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” It’s a nice phrase, and hey, it even rhymes, but what if that glossy miracle apple is coated in pesticides ? The infographic below suggests that continual exposure to pesticide-laden fruit and vegetables can lead to health risks like nerve disorders and, in children, possibly early onset puberty. It seems to me that these health risks counteract any good fruits and veggies are supposed to do. So, what to do ?"

"One of ALMA's first images shows the Antennae Galaxies (also known as NGC 4038 and 4039), a pair of distorted colliding spiral galaxies about 70 million light-years away, in the constellation of Corvus."

"LLANO CHAJNANTOR, Chile - A powerful telescope affording a view of the universe unmatched by most ground-based observatories gazed onto distant galaxies for the first time Monday from deep in Chile’s Atacama desert.

The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, a joint project between Canada, Chile, the European Union, Japan, Taiwan and the United States, officially opened for astronomers after a decade of planning and construction.

The world’s biggest astronomy project, ALMA is described as the most powerful millimeter/submillimeter-wavelength telescope ever and the most complex ground-based observatory.

The first images arrived at the mega-site in northern Chile from 12 of the 66 radio telescopes."

"Another Cassini stunner ! This gorgeous, suitable-for-framing image shows two of Saturn’s moons hanging below the planet’s rings, as if strung on a necklace. Beautiful ! Enceladus (504 kilometers, 313 miles across) appears just below the rings, while Tethys (1062 kilometers, 660 miles across) appears below. In this shot, Cassini is also closer to Tethys than Enceladus: the spacecraft is 208,000 kilometers (139,000 miles) from Tethys and 272,000 kilometers (169,000 miles) from Enceladus. This image was taken on September 13, 2011."

"In this spectacular image, observations using infrared light and X-ray light see through the obscuring dust and reveal the intense activity near the galactic core. Note that the center of the galaxy is located within the bright white region to the right of and just below the middle of the image. The entire image width covers about one-half a degree, about the same angular width as the full moon."
