"Malope trifida 'Vulcan', or Annual Mallow, is a glabrous, annual, herb native to Spain and North Africa. 'Vulcan' is a tetraploid hybrid of the original species. Plants will reach up to 3 feet (0.9 m) tall with a spread of about 20 inches (50 cm) wide. Leaves are rounded, dentate, unlobed or acutely 3 lobed. These are great plants for containers and for use in the landscape. In the landscape, they will reseed themselves in the fall in zone 7. They are very easy plants to grow."

"...the 6.4*1018 instructions per second that human kind can carry out on its general-purpose computers in 2007 are in the same ballpark area as the maximum number of nerve impulses executed by one human brain per second,” they write.

Our total storage capacity is the same as an adult human’s DNA. And there are several billion humans on the planet."

"Gippsland is a large rural region in Victoria, Australia. The place is well known with its mystery of blue glowing water that appears during the night. However, just recently, the mystery has been solved. Lake Gippsland (actually a network of lakes) teems with microorganisms that produce a ghostly blue glow thanks to their natural luminescence. This makes this body of water a beautiful and unique tourist attraction at night."

"This sea worm, a polychaete, is one of the few creatures that make yellow light. If disturbed, it can let loose glowing sparks from foot-like appendages called parapodia. In this picture you can also see its eggs, which will soon be released into the water."

An invasive kudzu-eating bug that swept across Georgia last year has now been detected in Alabama.

Though you might be tempted to celebrate the arrival of a bug that eats The Vine That Ate the South, this kudzu bug stinks. Both literally and figuratively.

"In visible light, the North American nebula resembles its namesake continent. But looking at it in the infrared spectrum, a whole new perspective explodes into view. Clouds of dust and gas come to life, as light from massive young star heats and shape the clouds, and dramatic clusters of baby stars which can only be seen in infrared burst into view"
