"The photo above shows the Milky Way rising over Monument Valley, Utah. The galactic center is the bright mass of stars slightly below and to the right of the image's center. Near the center is the constellation Sagittarius -- the constellation of Scorpio is at the left edge of large rock outcrop at right. Antares, the brightest star in Scorpio, is above and to the left of the outcrop. Although the night sky is very dark above Monument Valley, time exposed photographs reveal the glow of distant population areas. The brightest area appears to be Gallup, New Mexico (bottom center, about 100 mi or 160 km distant), with the lights of Farmington, New Mexico at bottom left. This image was taken on June 4, 2011 from a room balcony in The View Hotel."

    A Blessing for the Woods

    by Michael S. Glaser

Before I leave, almost without noticing,
before I cross the road and head toward
    what I have intentionally postponed...

Let me stop to say a blessing for these woods:
for crows barking and squirrels scampering,
for trees and fungus and multi-colored leaves,

for the way sunlight laces with shadows
through each branch and leaf of tree,
for these paths that take me in,
for these paths that lead me out.

"Karakuri   are incredibly sophisticated mechanized puppets dating from Japan’s Edo period (200 to 300 years ago). The puppets perform astonishingly intricate tasks like writing and shooting arrows, powered by nothing more than handmade clockwork technology. Matthew Allard shot a gorgeous video for Al Jazeera Frames about Hideki Higashino, one of the view remaining Karakuri makers still practicing the art."

"What a treasure it is to find and look at a lovingly made, intricate bird's nest... Birds of all sizes and colors have one thing in common: they make nests in which to raise their young. Sometimes the nests are nothing more than scrapes in the ground; other times they are fully enclosed or sewn together with
spider's webs or fine grasses. Sharon Beals has written a fantastic book called 50 Birds Nests and the Birds that Built Them ."

"On Sunday, July 31, 2011, when Expedition 28 astronaut Ron Garan aboard the International Space Station looked out his window, this is what he saw: the moon. And, he saw it 16 times. Said Garan, "We had simultaneous sunsets and moonsets." For Garan and the rest of the station crew, this extraordinary event is a daily occurrence. Since the station orbits the Earth every 90 minutes, each day the crew experiences this about 16 times a day."
