Glassy lustrous water clear transparent colorless crystals of twinned fluorite to 3.4 cm in size are set aesthetically upon a small amount of matrix. Shows perfectly all around 360 degrees. Damage-free. Size: 5.5 x 4.1 x 2.7 cm (miniature)"
"A mysterious pattern of stones sits at the summit of Medicine Mountain, nearly 10,000 feet above the Bighorn Range in Wyoming. Covered by heavy snows for most of the year, the stone configuration reveals itself and its purpose only in the summer months.
The stones are arranged in the shape of a wheel, 80 feet across and with 28 spokes emanating from a central cairn. The cairn, a ring-shaped pile of rocks, is large enough to sit in and is surrounded by six others that lie along the wheel’s circumference."
Waterfall, Moonbow, and Aurora from Iceland Image Credit & Copyright: Stephane Vetter
"The longer you look at this image, the more you see. Perhaps your eye is first drawn to the picturesque waterfall called Skogarfoss visible on the image right. Just as prevalent, however, in this Icelandic visual extravaganza, is the colorful arc of light on the left. This chromatic bow is not a rainbow, since the water drops did not originate in rainfall nor are they reflecting light from the Sun. Rather, the drops have drifted off from the waterfall and are now illuminated by the nearly full Moon. High above are the faint green streaks of aurora. The scene, captured one night last month, also shows a beautiful starscape far in the background, including the Big Dipper, part of the constellation of the Great Bear (Ursa Major)."
“Custos Cavum” (Guardian of the Hole) by South Korean artist U-Ram Choe is a beautiful kinetic metal sculpture of a skeletal seal that appears to be slowly breathing.
"Once upon a time, there were two worlds. They were connected to each other through a number of small holes, as if the worlds were breathing through these holes. However, the holes had a tendency to close up, so there were guardians next to each one to keep them open. The guardians were called “Custos Cavum.” They took the form of seals and had large front teeth, which they used to gnaw the holes to prevent them from closing up."
Neuschwanstein Castle is a 19th-century Romanesque Revival palace on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany. The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and as a homage to Richard Wagner. Contrary to common belief, Ludwig paid for the palace out of his personal fortune and extensive borrowing, not with Bavarian public funds
Castles are not fairy tale concepts. They exist and are magnificent specimens of man-made beauty. Normally castles are located far away – isolated from the the main city. They are usually surrounded by vast stretches of greenery and make the overall sight even more spectacular.
Note: Title of the castle names are click-able Wikipedia links, just in case if you want to know more about the castle you adore.
The Holburne Museum in Bath in the United Kingdom is giving its visitors a new winter experience – and it makes a very cool change from the usual decorative lights we see at this time of year!
Field of Light, the artwork of acclaimed lighting artist Bruce Munro, was yesterday switched on in the grounds of the Museum.
In late October 2008, Bruce Munro and a team of 5 installed the Field of Light on the grassy roof of the visitor’s centre, called the Link Building, at the Eden Project in Cornwall. They worked over three days to install this version of FoL, made of 6,000 acrylic stems through which fibre optic cables run, each crowned with a clear glass sphere. There are 11 external projectors and each one sends different colours down the fibre to it’s circle of stems. The stems themselves hold no electric power at all. The installation covers an area of 60 x 20 meters, using 24, 000 meters of fibre optic cable and is best viewed after dark. It will remain at the Eden Project until the end of March 09.
