Exotic New Mars Images

"A new batch of sharp Martian close-ups from NASA's HiRISE camera were released on Sept. 1. HiRISE (High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) has been circling Mars on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter for four years now, taking dramatic photos of the red planet with a telephoto lens to make any paparazzi jealous. The camera can focus on objects the size of a beach ball from more than 180 miles away."

Weird Pictures, Wonderful Things

"Incendia is a 3D fractal program that is the result of a combination of many fractal experiments. Most (not all) of the fractals of Incendia are IFS attractors, which are the fastest method for rendering complex 3D fractals."" This approach is an artistic one, and lets the user explore the mostly unexplored world of the 3D fractal art. Here are 30 fantastic examples of Incendia art created by female fractal artist Deirdre Reynolds from United States"

Migrating Floating Gardens

"The gardens would be suspended in the air from large remotely controlled dirigibles. Each inflatable craft would house thousands of smaller plants attached to long vines. A family of dirigibles would migrate within a city, moving towards areas where the heat island effect is greatest, and also migrate seasonally, traveling to southern cities during winter months and northern cities during summer months"

Yampa River and Green River

Photographer: Jay Brazel
Summary Author: Jay Brazel; Jim Foster

"an impressive view of the Yampa River (top) and the appropriately named Green River (center) at Steamboat Rock in Echo Park Utah/Colorado. It was taken from Harpers Corner near the Dinosaur National Monument. A short distance below Echo Park, the Green River loops around Steamboat Rock, crosses the Mitten Park fault, and empties into Whirlpool Canyon, a huge gorge spanning 1.5 miles (2.4 km) – it’s approximately 2,500 feet (762 m) deep."

Volcano wakes from four-century sleep

Volcano.jpg

Indonesia's Mount Sinabung continued erupting yesterday, two days after it sprang back into life after over 400 years of inactivity.

30,000 people were evacuated to emergency shelters, as the volcano spewed smoke and ash several kilometres into the air. Thousands have since returned to the area, despite the risk of further eruptions.

The volcano, in the Karo Regency of North Sumatra, had not been closely monitored because it was believed to be relatively safe.
